ATMs offer quick and convenient access to your money, but it’s important to stay alert while using them. A few basic safety habits can help protect both you and your account.
Always choose ATMs in well lit, public locations and pay close attention to your surroundings. Be cautious of anyone nearby, especially strangers offering help. If something feels unusual or the machine looks tampered with, leave and find another ATM.
Protect your PIN by shielding the keypad and memorizing your number. Never write it down or allow others to see you enter it. Prepare deposits ahead of time and avoid counting cash at the machine to limit the time you spend there.
If using a drive up ATM, keep your doors locked, your engine running, and leave enough space to exit safely. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying valuables that may attract unwanted attention.
Regularly monitor your account statements and balances, and report any suspicious activity to the credit union immediately. If a situation feels threatening, prioritize your personal safety and get to a safe place as soon as possible.
Staying aware and prepared can help ensure every ATM visit is a safe one.
